Following the 1870 war, a major fortification system was set up in eastern France, particularly around Langres. Some forty works (forts or batteries) were built. This route, which passes close to three of them, will give you a brief overview of this network.
Starting from Neuilly-l'Evêque, a charming village in the Val de Gris that owes its name to its acquisition in the 11th century by the bishopric of Langres, you will head towards Chauffourt. Before you reach the village, the Dampierre fort (known as the "Magalotti" fort) sits enthroned at the top of the spur on your right. At 52 hectares, it is the largest fort in France.
You then head for Bassigny and the village of Andilly, at the foot of Mont Mercure, where you will find the remains of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa occupied from the 1st to the 3rd century. They include thermal baths and a farm. A Merovingian necropolis was later built on the ruins of the villa.
From Marcilly, where you can make a short diversions to the chapel of Presles, you will reach the Amance valley before climbing up to Montlandon. A superb view of the Bassigny region awaits you here, as does the Mortier fort, which can be visited by prior arrangement.
Then head back down to Celsoy and take in the curious turreted bell tower of its church. Then, after Plesnoy and a steep climb, pass the Médavy fort before reaching the Val de Gris and Neuilly-l'Evêque.
