Its late construction made it the last fort in the Langrois system; it was intended to fill the vulnerable gap between the Plesnoy and Cognelot forts. Located close to the road to Belfort, it protected the road and the plateau overlooking the upper Saône basin. Small in size, it is one of the last remaining cavalry fortifications. Unusually for the Langres forts, the gorge front (now partly filled in) was defended by flanking casemates on either side of the axial entrance. A concrete observation post can still be seen at the top of one of the crossing shelters. It is also one of the few structures in the area to have preserved the oak floor of its gunpowder magazine in perfect condition.
