Nestling at the foot of Mont Mercure, in the heart of the Bassigny countryside, the Gallo-Roman villa at Andilly-en-Bassigny offers a rare insight into ancient rural life.
Discovered in the 19th century, the site was excavated for almost thirty years, revealing a vast estate comprising a wealthy residence, thermal baths, farm buildings and a Merovingian necropolis. Listed as a Historic Monument, it is now one of the few sites of this type to have been fully explored and made accessible to the public in eastern France.
Visiting the site gives visitors a real insight into the organisation of a large Gallo-Roman farm, ideally situated close to a major route linking Langres to the Rhine. With its blend of architecture, landscape and history, the Andilly site is an exceptional testimony to the past, one that is both accessible and immersive.
It's a unique place to discover, first-hand, the reality of a large ancient estate.
