The village of Montsaugeon, perched on the side of a hillock rising to 338m, is reflected in a pond at its foot. Visible from very far away, the hillock towers 60m above the surrounding plain, and its privileged position led to it being occupied in very ancient times, as it was easy to defend.
A pebble-cutting station dating back to the Middle Palaeolithic (the oldest human presence in the département) was recently discovered at the foot of the hill. Dozens of Neolithic flint artefacts have also been found in the area, as well as two burial mounds on either side of the road leading to Prauthoy, containing remains dating from the Bronze Age to the La Tène period. This discovery has led some authors to suggest that the area around Montsaugeon was the site of the battle between Vercingetorix and Caesar in the days leading up to the siege of Alesia.
