Le chemin de ronde de Montsaugeon

Passing through the gatehouse, walk up to the first street on the left, known as "Rue de la Goubaud". In this street, you walk along one of the three enclosures of the ancient castle ramparts that once encircled the hilltop, encompassing the upper part of the present-day village. At the bottom of the rampart, there was a wide ditch that has now been filled in, and whose memory is preserved today in the street known as "Chemin des Fossés".

Note the alternation of fine middle-class houses with gates, with those of farmers and wine-growers. The houses on the left were built immediately on the former curtain wall of the vanished rampart. After no. 7 (on the left), walk along a long retaining wall on the right, then climb a grassy path at its end that leads directly to the church. This path is the last vestige of one of the defensive lanes leading directly from the castle to the rampart.
