Rivière-les-Fosses is located 24 km as the crow flies to the south of Langres, on the edge of Burgundy, in a remote area on the edge of the Langres Plateau, where the Coulange river rises. The many eyebrows that appear on the hillsides, often channelled into ditches, may have given the village its name.
