Although located between two major Roman roads coming from Langres, the Choiseul site does not seem to have emerged before feudalism. The existence in the 11th century of the chapel of St-Nicolas on the mound of the primitive castle suggests the probable existence of a motte castrale in this location, the circumvallations of which can still be seen. It was here that Régnier, the first known lord, lived in 1105. It is possible that this chapel also served as a parish church for the serfs of the castle, before the construction of the current church, which became a priory and parish church in 1157, at the instigation of Raynard I, Lord of Choiseul, who founded a Benedictine priory there, dependent on Molême, with a cemetery.
The castle on the hill, the cradle of the Choiseul family, was then under the authority of the Bishop of Langres, and its lord was the Bishop's first baron. In 1573, the Huguenots seized it in defiance of treaties, but the Catholic nobility of Bassigny took it back, and the King ordered it dismantled...
