This village is located at one of the sources feeding the Tille de Villemervry, along with Lamargelle-aux-Bois. Because it is located in a valley on the flats of the Langres plateau, it is possible that the 12th-century form Chese messein indicates hidden houses (Latin Casa) (from Old French musser). The area was already inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of the Gallo-Roman settlement of Champ Dolent opposite the present-day village, and the poorly-dated cremated remains discovered in a sand quarry overlooking the village...
