Strategically located at the foot of the Langres Plateau, close to Burgundy and Franche-Comté, the Montsaugeonnais region is steeped in history. Its castles and strongholds dating back to the Middle Ages bear witness to this troubled history. From Burgundy, the Montsaugeonnais has also inherited the quality of its vineyards, which you can discover at the end of your walk, at the Muid Montsaugeonnais tasting cellar or in the restaurant at Vaux-sous-Aubigny.
First of all, you'll need to take the road through the Coulange valley, passing through the village of Couzon-sur-Coulange. At Rivière-les-Fosses, the Maison du Houblon will show you how hops are grown, how they are produced, their flavours, the skills and tools used and the lives of the last hop growers. You will then make your way to the Val d'Esnoms, where the houses have retained their typical stone appearance, as in Esnoms-au-Val and Leuchey. From here, there is a magnificent view over the valley, which you will have to descend to reach Courcelles-Val-d'Esnoms.
Your next stop, after passing the Badin, is Chatoillenot. Take a stroll through the narrow streets or under the stone arches. Take a refreshing break at the Saint Eloi fountain, where your children can dip their feet. As you continue your walk, you'll come to Aubigny. Here, Burgundian architecture has left its mark on the village church. It has a squat, robust appearance, with stone dominating right down to the roof. This remarkable church dates back to the 13th century. It's well worth a diversion before heading back down to Vaux-sous-Aubigny.
