Ideal for families, the Langres protected area offers a pleasant 3.5 km walk, dotted with town houses, religious buildings, Renaissance houses... Perched on its rocky outcrop at an altitude of 475 m, the town of Langres, listed as one of the 50 most beautiful towns in France, stands like a proud fortress at the gateway to Champagne and Burgundy. Successively Gallic oppidum, capital of the Lingon people, seat of the bishopric and royal stronghold, the town has perfected its armour over the centuries. Each era added its own touch, transforming the defensive system of Langres into a veritable history book, retracing 17 centuries of fortifications. Langres has preserved a remarkable heritage from its long military past, with 3.5km of ramparts dotted with 12 towers and 9 gates. Classified as a 1st category stronghold in the 19th century, its defensive system then developed over a 13 km perimeter, with a vast citadel and around thirty fortifications, including eight detached forts, to the point where Langres became the largest fortified enclosure in Europe...
