At the beginning of our era, a wealthy Lingon, concerned about his posthumous fame, had a large funerary monument erected on a carefully chosen dominant position. Situated on the edge of the Roman road, the monument was a visible reminder of the wealth of the deceased... This sumptuous tomb, in the shape of a slender tower, was built on three Corinthian levels.
Over the centuries, the mausoleum was destroyed and used as a quarry. All that remains is the base of the inner blocking, which can be seen here.
Located 16 km from Langres, the remains of the Gallo-Roman mausoleum at Faverolles are an exceptional testimony to this period. Built in 20 BC, the site of the Gallo-Roman mausoleum has been laid out as a discovery trail, allowing visitors to see the remains of the tomb in their archaeological and geological setting. Panels along the route explain the burial enclosure, the Gallo-Roman road network, the limestone quarries, etc.
To fully understand the reconstruction of the building in its original splendour, it is highly recommended that you visit the Faverolles Archaeological Workshop, where the finest architectural (capitals, cornices, etc.) and decorative (lions, tritons, masks) pieces are on display.
