The village of Auberive grew up around its Cistercian abbey (the 24th daughter of Clairvaux), founded in 1135, on the banks of the River Aube. Originally, it was simply a group of lay people working for the abbey. The complex formed a special enclave under French jurisdiction, on the borders of Champagne and Burgundy, known in the past as the "Enclos d'Auberive". Bounded by high walls that can still be seen around the abbey, this enclosure included only part of today's village. In particular, it included an inn ("l'Hôtel du Lion d'Or") at the very gateway to the abbey, and an old farmhouse ("La Theurelle") which, during periods of prosperity, extended to "La Rue des fermiers", several houses for craftsmen and the abbey's wood wardens ("La Rue des Gardes des Bois de l'abbaye"), an auditorium and finally an abbey palace from the Renaissance onwards ("l'Abbatiale")...
