At the end of the 1789 Revolution, Auberive Abbey was bought as national property by Denis Diderot's son-in-law, the captain of industry Nicolas-Abel-François Caroillon de Vandeuil. Married to Angélique Diderot, the philosopher's daughter from Langre, Caroillon de Vandeuil transformed the austere abbey into a comfortable home, created a vast pleasure park on the banks of the River Aube, and installed in front of the monumental entrance to the abbey the magnificent wrought iron railings, attributed to the workshop of Jean Lamour from Nancy, for the choir of the abbey church of Beaulieu (52), which Caroillon de Vandeuil has brought back here, surmounted by his initials. The gates have been listed as historic monuments since 20 August 1903, and the entire portal with its arched walls has been listed as a historic monument since 16 October 1956.
