The village is situated on the Tille of the same name, fed by the springs of Chalmessin and Lamargelle-aux-Bois. Its name may have come from a group of dwellings built around a farm (villa) founded or belonging to a possible Mervinus. Little is known about the occupation of the area during Antiquity.
