This village is ideally situated at one of the main sources of the Tille (the misnamed Tille dite de Villemoron), which rises at Bellefontaine in the Musseau area. The village is located in a fold of the Langres plateau, which would suggest that the name Musseau may come from the Gallic mukiare* = to hide, a term commonly used by Gallic populations to refer to emerging waters, and which gave rise to the Old French musser with the same meaning. Although its territory was crossed by the Roman road from Langres to Autun, there is currently no trace of ancient occupation...
