Founded in the 11th century by Etienne, who had been appointed by the abbey of Montier-en-Der, Joinville initially took the form of a feudal castle. This first castle was built on the Haute Butte, which overlooked a meander in the Marne, giving it control over the entire valley. Attested as early as the 12th century, an urban centre around the church of Notre-Dame developed below, on the banks of the river. Throughout the Middle Ages, Joinville and its lords took advantage of the town's position as a frontier between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.
