Baissey is situated on the Côte Domérienne and is part of the Vingeanne basin. This small village of 200 inhabitants covers an area of 1,000 hectares, with a 500-hectare forest on neighbouring land. The Haut de Baissey, at 523 m, is one of the highest points in the department (the Haute-Marne relief is made up of loosely defined peaks known as "Hauts"). The origins of the village date back to Gallo-Roman times. Baissey, a fiefdom of the bishops, had administrative oversight of Leuchey and Verseilles-le-Bas. In 871, under the reign of the bishop of Langres (Isaac), a synod (deliberative assembly of ecclesiastics) was held in this village. Before 1900, the village had 3 cafés, 3 grocery shops, 1 post office, 2 blacksmiths who made agricultural equipment and 1 bakery. There was also a coaching inn. The last bistro closed in 1975. Only the blacksmiths remained. The population at the time was 800....
