A new town created in the 13th century on a plateau 504 m above sea level, La Mothe was equipped with a powerful bastioned wall in the 16th century. It thus became Lorraine's second stronghold after Nancy.

The kings of France never tolerated this construction on the very border of their kingdom. After three sieges, in 1634, 1642-43 and 1644-45, it was razed to the ground, including churches and convents, on the orders of Mazarin. Since then, nature has reclaimed its rights.

Two signposted routes allow visitors to freely explore the main remains of this martyred city, walking through a pleasant wooded area with signposts. The panels illustrate and comment on the La Mothe site along the entire route.

The access road to La Mothe starts from the centre of the village of Soulaucourt-Sur-Mouzon.
