The ZNIEFF known as the batteries between Charmoilles and Changey and the lawns of the Movanges plateau is located on a high mound and includes a battery to the east, in the commune of Changey, not far from the Bois de la Montagne (mesoneutrophic oak woodland-charmaie on the plateau and oak-beech woodland on the slope) and an infantry barracks to the west in the commune of Charmoilles on the Plateau de Movanges, with grasslands largely grazed by sheep and groups on slabs and rocky cliffs. The main plant species of interest are red clover and striated clover, which are on the red list of plants in Champagne-Ardenne, Boehmer's timothy, hairy gentian and others. The rest of the vegetation is made up of a fine oak and chestnut grove with an oriental species at the edge of its range, the obscure lungwort. The northern slope is occupied by an oak-beech forest with broad-leaved lime. White capillary can be found on the shaded cliffs.
The two military structures are wintering sites for eight species of bat: the little rhinolophus, the great murine and the eared vespertilion, protected at national level (since 1981) and European level (Bern Convention), listed in appendices II and IV of the Habitats Directive and in the red book of threatened fauna in France. They are accompanied by the moustached vespertilion, Natterer's vespertilion, pipistrelle, Daubenton's vespertilion and common serotine, also protected in France and Europe and included in the red list of mammals in Champagne-Ardenne. These batteries were selected (along with thirty-two other military sites in the Langres region) as part of a cross-border programme to study and protect chiropterans in western Central Europe. The Champagne-Ardenne Heritage Conservatory has taken steps to protect the sites.
