Perched on a rocky spur 280 metres high, Donjeux castle watches over the Rognon valley. The birthplace of the Sires de Joinville and several other great families of the Haut-Marnais region, its roots date back to the 11th century. The current classical-style castle replaced a fortified building in the 18th century. The construction of the new building was accompanied by the creation of a large formal garden on the slopes of the promontory. The estate was designed to function almost autonomously, in harmony with its surroundings. Sold in 1810, the Donjeux estate is now owned by the Viney family. The family has restored the west wing of the château, which was destroyed by fire in 2000. In 2022, these restorations were awarded the "Jury's Favourite" prize in the Dassault-Le Figaro trophy in association with Demeure Historique.
The château is privately owned and the interiors are not open to visitors, but the garden and grounds of the château are open to the public free of charge between 1 July and 20 September 2026, from 10am to 5.30pm.
Please note that in 2026, some areas may be closed due to building work.
