A historic and demanding route through woodland and plateaux
Departing from the Chantraines cycle-rail station, this 15km route offers a physical and cultural immersion in the rolling countryside of the Haute-Marne. The route (signposted yellow-yellow) takes in varied, often rugged terrain, with forest climbs, plateau crossings and descents into the valleys. The loop takes around 5 hours to complete, and includes some major sites: the ancient abbey at Septfontaines, the Neolithic necropolis dating back to 3000 BC, and the dolmen at Rochefort-sur-la-Côte. Each section of the route has its own steep gradients and uninterrupted views. The trail then heads towards Briaucourt before returning to Chantraines via an old railway line. This trail combines sustained effort with a wealth of archaeological treasures, ideal for hikers looking for a challenge as well as ancient memories. A must if you want to combine prehistoric heritage with walking adventure.
