The site of Aujeurres, in a slight depression in the Langres Plateau, has been inhabited by man since the dawn of time. Ten thousand years ago, our ancestors lived in the caves beneath the cliffs. One day they carved arrows and axes and built huts. Having learnt masonry, they built houses using local stone. Our sunny hillsides have always been good for growing crops, albeit sometimes of poor quality. They turn green in spring, and the nearby forests shiver in the breeze, sheltering myriads of birds, but moaning in the wind on stormy days.
Aujeurres was practically built on the roof of the world, on the watershed, but sheltered from the highest peaks. The Aube, which flows into the Seine and the English Channel, is less than a league away, and the source of the Vingeanne, which flows down to the Saône and the Mediterranean, is even closer. It's because water is an element of life that Aujeurres exists. At a time when our ancestors possessed nothing more than animal instincts, this instinct fixed them here. The line of ridges at sunset has always been a passageway, criss-crossed by prehistoric footpaths and followed by the Roman road from Langres to Autun. Vestiges of these early times remain hidden in our soil.
The aridity of the Langres Plateau has always demanded strong, courageous men; our race has flourished in hardship, our boys are virile and our girls are beautiful. We are the children of ancient Lingonie, a province with a name that is both powerful and gentle. We are people who love space and freedom. These are hard times for farmers, but our fields are still well cultivated. Deserted farms, the ransom paid to modern times, are taken over and lovingly converted by those who have been driven out by these times, but who are coming back or have come back because they keep in their hearts the love of their native soil, the soil that remains a large part of themselves.
