Welcome to Joinville, a thousand-year-old town with the "Petite Cité de Caractère" and "Village Etape" labels.
Founded around the year 1000, the town of Joinville developed mainly in the Middle Ages, below the château d'en haut (now destroyed), which dominated the Marne valley. Made famous by the name of Jean de Joinville, chronicler of the crusade led in the company of Saint Louis, this small town has preserved many features of the Middle Ages. Let yourself be surprised by the maze of narrow streets in the old town and its medieval houses nestling against the hill of the old feudal castle, which was once the birthplace of the Dukes of Guise and Princes of Joinville. Enter the church and discover the recently restored relic of Saint Joseph's belt...
In the 16th century, the town experienced a new golden age with the patronage of the Dukes of Guise, who considerably shaped the town, encouraging the installation of religious orders, founding a hospital, building an auditorium (former court) and the Grand Jardin castle, and financing the creation of artistic masterpieces.
Take a stroll along the Quai des Peceaux along the "Little Venice", and admire a 13th-century rampart tower, the Quai des Mailles or the 16th-century Poncelot bridge.
Whether you are interested in a general visit or a particular theme, the team at the Tourist Office/Château du Grand Jardin will be happy to help you with any requests you may have, by prior arrangement only.
