All that remains of this tower is its trapezoidal shape, which was filled in in the mid-19th century. Its name refers to its proximity to the former rue Surchoue, which in 1855 became the present boulevard De Lattre.
Prior to 1412, the town was defended only by a structure known as a chaffaud, a wooden construction that crowned and overhung the rampart. Replacing it with a tower required the use of stone from a quarry to the south of the town, in a place called Blanchefontaine. The roof was built from flat stones - or lava - brought from the village of Perrancey, around ten kilometres away.
