The lower gateway to the faubourg of Sous-Murs was protected by a fore-gate - a barbican - inside which was a building used as an octroi (a tax collection point for goods entering the town).| The small artillery tower at Sous-Murs, built in the early 16th century, protected the nearby gateway. Shaped like a horseshoe, it has a single room with lateral embrasures for flanking. From here, harquebusiers could control the immediate surroundings, while small-calibre cannons could be positioned on the terrace.
The Sous-Murs enclosure was completely restored in 1859 by the Military Engineers.
