The grassland on the Saints-Geosmes plateau occupies an exceptional position on the horizontal surface of a limestone plateau.
For nature specialists :
This is a rare case of grassland on deep silts (Festuco lemanii-Brometum and Coronillo-Vicietum tenuifoliae); belonging to the Army (training ground), it has escaped being recultivated.
Vegetation:
The plant species are of southern or central European origin and are typical of the region's grasslands, with some orchids (pyramidal orchid, military orchid, puff orchid).
Fauna:
The entomofauna is rich and well diversified, particularly butterflies and grasshoppers, which have the same biogeographical tonality as some of the flora: In particular, the plantain checkerspot (a butterfly that frequents flowering lawns and meadows, and whose caterpillar lives and hibernates on the plantain), the white-spotted grasshopper (a grasshopper that prefers bushy, dry areas) and a song cricket (Chrysochraon brachyptera), all three of which are on the red lists of Lepidoptera and Orthoptera in Champagne-Ardenne, can be seen here. Some birds frequent the site (18 are protected, including the black flycatcher, a very rare and dwindling breeder, which is on the regional red list). Located at the gateway to the town of Langres, the site is also of great educational and landscape interest. The site is in relatively good condition, but like many lawns, it is threatened by natural dynamics.
