The Maquis de Pincourt was a camp for FTPF/OCM resistance fighters active in the Haute-Marne during the Second World War, situated in the woods near the farm at Pincourt-le-Haut.
The camp brought together those who had refused to take part in the Compulsory Labour Service (STO) and young people opposed to the occupying forces, under the command of Lieutenant Robert Josselin (camp commander), amongst others. Estimates varied from 50 to over 250 resistance fighters (with rumours even suggesting a figure of a thousand, which the Germans feared).
On 13 September 1944, during the fighting for the Liberation, an ambush on the Côte de l’Abondance led to the deaths of Lieutenant Robert Josselin and the Resistance fighter André (Antoine) Baets.
This memorial stone honours the memory of these Resistance fighters who fell in battle.
