Stele erected in memory of 3 Canadian airmen, buried in Chauffourt cemetery. On 26 April, a Lancaster ND850 took off from Metheringham for its first mission, a raid on Schweinfurt and its ball bearing production units. Severely damaged by fire from a Messerschmidt Me110 night fighter, the captain initially decided to drop the bombs to lighten the aircraft and try to get closer to the Swiss border. As the aircraft continued to lose altitude, it was partially evacuated by its crew. 4 airmen jumped by parachute and were taken care of by the local resistance, who transported them to Switzerland. The plane and its 3 remaining crew members crashed near Chauffourt at around 9.30pm.
