The Meuse, an international river (convention of 12 May 1863), originates at Pouilly en Bassigny, not far from the watershed between the North Sea and Mediterranean basins. It is 950 km long and runs for 47 km in the Haute-Marne region, where it is joined by a dozen tributaries, which either originate there or spend part of their journey there. On the Meuse, the Saint Laurent fountain, also known as Sainte Salaberge, was thought to cure certain ailments.
