The salty water that gushed out of the fountain attracted cattle and game from the surrounding woods and forests before people did. This interest on the part of the animals prompted two people to look into the fountain and take samples of the water for biochemical analysis. These analyses revealed a water quality comparable to that of Bourbonne-les-Bains, which attracted the interest of the Société des Eaux de Vittel, which eventually acquired the concession.
