The wells, which were very expensive to build because of the thickness of the limestone, made it possible to reach the water table. They were essentially the prerogative of the local authorities, who were responsible for digging and maintaining them on a regular basis. In 1648, there were 17 public wells spread throughout the city. Two of them were dug at the same time as the construction of the Navarre and Orval towers and the Petit-Sault tower, in the early 16th century. The large sums involved in the construction of such works also made it possible to finance these public facilities at a lower cost.
