This pump, like the many others in the village, was installed at the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, as a service to the population. In 1899, Boucheseiche, the village mayor, looked into the possibility of equipping Varennes with rosary pumps. One of these was tested on a communal well in the church square. In response to positive feedback from residents, who appreciated the ease of use and efficiency of these devices, the local council decided to order five new pumps in 1902. Placed in wells in five different squares in the village, they provided many services to the population. Other pumps, of the "Morin-gra" or "Nordas" make, were later added. Most of them are still in place.
