In the 13th century, the Lords of Dampierre decided to build a fortified town at the confluence of the Marne and Ornel rivers to protect the borders of the Kingdom of France. Saint-Dizier, a strategic town, became a major royal stronghold in the 15th century.
The castle was home to high-ranking lords and important figures, especially in the 16th century, such as Marie-Stuart in 1560, the Cardinal of Lorraine in 1573 and the Duchess of Montpensier in 1588.
After the Second World War, the Haute-Marne département bought the building to house the sub-prefecture.
At the foot of the fortifications, take a fun walk, open all year round, to discover the three 13th-century towers: Tour du Saint-Esprit, Tour de la Batterie and Tour du Moulin.
