Following a vow to spare the village made by the inhabitants of Verseilles-le-Haut during a bombing raid on 15 August 1944, a statue of the Virgin Mary was installed on an esplanade built by the villagers between 1944 and 1949. The 3.75m-high cast-iron statue (weighing 3.5 tonnes), which apparently could not have been carried on a lorry through the gates of Langres (half of the baby Jesus is sawn off), was finally inaugurated on 9 October 1949 and blessed by Abbé Joseph Rabiet, the parish priest of Longeau. Since then, there has been a pilgrimage and procession to the church every first Sunday in September. On 20 June 1995, the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus were struck by lightning, knocking down their stone halos, which have not been replaced since. This site is one of the most beautiful belvederes in the region, with a wide panoramic view over the Orcevaux and Baissey valleys, the Villegusien lake and the plains of the Saône.
