Notre-Dame du Soc à Montlandon

Notre-Dame du Soc à Montlandon

This statue of the Virgin Mary was erected in 1872 on the rocky spur at a place called "Le Soc". The statue was the brainchild of the parish priest Pierre Michaut and his brother Claude. The villagers were poor and their generosity, which had already been tested by the cost of renovating the church, could not be called upon again. That's why their participation was manual. They transported all the earth and gravel needed to build the plinth in harvest baskets.
One hundred and sixty cubic metres were estimated for this purpose. It was inaugurated on 24 May 1872. An annual ceremony is held on 15 August. At an altitude of over 400 metres, on its plinth, it dominates the lush green depression of the Amance. The inscription reads: "Notre Dame des grâces, Priez pour nous, La paroisse de Montlandon, a érigé ce monument; A l'Immaculée Conception, Comme témoignage de son amour. ave maria. The centenary of this monument was celebrated in 1972. The Bishop, numerous priests and local and departmental personalities attended this grandiose ceremony. Some five hundred people took part.
