"It's a beautiful knife ... but it's a Nogent!" exclaims Roubaud's character in Jean Renoir's film "La bête humaine" (1938).
The town of Nogent - the name Nogent-en-Bassigny has not been used since 1972 - has acquired a solid reputation, since its name alone is enough to identify a quality cutlery factory; refinement and diversity are the hallmarks of this world-renowned cutlery factory, which is sought after by some of France's greatest names (Christofle, Hermès, Ercuis, Puiforcat, etc.).
The Musée de la Coutellerie has been set up to showcase this heritage, and presents the technical and social history of this traditional craft in a modern setting, from the 18th century to the present day. The museum's collections reflect the refinement and diversity of this craft, including cutlery, table and craft knives, hand tools, chisels, surgical instruments and toiletries. Housed in a former cutlery factory, the museum also showcases new technologies, the fruit of traditional know-how that is now being revitalised.
