Commemorative plaque in honour of :
- The 3 nurses martyred by the Germans at the Château de Saulles for refusing to betray the Maquis of Bussières: Marie-Louise Bailly, Micheline Morey and Geneviève Cornubert;
- to Mr Charles Lemmer and Mr Roger Simonet, F.F.I. members of the Henry maquis (Bussières maquis) who fell at this location and died for France on 12 September 1944.
Mrs Bailly, born on 2 January 1922 in Bussières-lès-Belmont, came from a family of basket-makers, a profession that provided a livelihood for many people in the commune and surrounding area.
Madame Morey, born on 17 August 1922 in Cherbourg (Manche), joined the Resistance on 15 August 1944 as a liaison officer. The daughter of the future General Georges Morey (who died in Hanoi, Tonkin, in 1942), she lived with her mother in Toulon (Var), which they left in March 1944 after a bombing raid. They moved to Bussières-lès-Belmont, the village where the General was born.
Madame Cornubert was born on 26 May 1921 in Bussières-lès-Belmont.
The report of a surgical team that left Paris and arrived in the region on 10 September states that they were "beaten with billiard cues, then shot in the back of the head". Their bodies were found in a rubbish pit dug near the château.
Mr Lemmer was born on 1 May 1921 in Metz (Moselle); summarily executed on 11 September 1944 in Saulles (Haute-Marne); member of the Henry maquis (Bussières maquis).
Living in Langres, Mr Simonet was born on 16 August 1923 in Montreuil-Sous-Bois (Seine et Oise then Seine-Saint-Denis); summarily executed on 11 September 1944 in Saulles (Haute-Marne); member of the Henry maquis (Bussières maquis).
