This megalithic monument is said to be one of two menhirs still visible in the département, along with the one at Vitry-lès-Nogent. It is 6.56 m high and varies in width from 2.24 m at ground level to 1.50 m at the top.
Located near the old Roman road between Wassy and Naix (in the Meuse department), it features an inscription that has raised questions among those who have sought to understand its meaning.
Two meanings have been accepted: either "General Viromaros set the border of the Leucos state here", or the more likely "Here lies the body of Viromaros, son of Istatilos".
It was listed as a historic monument in 1883.
The monument has been damaged twice. One was caused by man: in 1782, when it fell and broke after an "archaeologist" intervened. The other was climatic: it was struck by lightning in 1986. On both occasions, in 1845 (only) and 1987, the Haute-Borne menhir was restored.
