Located on the edge of Place Jeanne-Mance, at number 5, the house of Didier-Pierre Diderot (the philosopher's younger brother) is a canon's residence built in the heart of this district originally reserved for clerics. On 7 January 1767, Didier-Pierre became a canon of the cathedral and bought a house in the district. At that time, the building was much larger, and most of the outbuildings have now disappeared or been incorporated into other plots. It was originally a private mansion, built between a courtyard and a garden, separated from the street by a gate and an enclosing wall. A Latin inscription: Cum Bona Spe "with good hope" surmounts the entrance door. Didier-Pierre's dealings with his brother Denis were fraught with conflict, as the two brothers held radically opposing views, particularly on religion.
