Originally with few, small openings, this building seems to have been designed more for defensive purposes than for residential use. The proximity of one of the gates to the canonical quarter, the Moab Gate, which was destroyed in the mid-19th century, supports this hypothesis. It would therefore have been a building designed by the canons of the cathedral, the very lords of this part of the town. The watchtower at one of the corners would have controlled access to the canons' enclosure. The roof is very steep and made of chestnut shingles. The supports for the old wooden gutters and the sculpted gargoyles still remain.
