A creation of a turbulent period (1787-1790), it replaces the former Barle tower, which has now disappeared, having become too cramped to accommodate the municipal administration of a town with an estimated population of 6,200 in 1760. The straight lines, regular curves, use of symmetry and sobriety reflect the spirit of the period, implemented by the architect François Nicolas Lancret (1717-1789).
