The metal industry was present in Arc, as in many places in the Haute-Marne; it ceased in 1857 when the Prince of Joinville decided to convert the forge still in use, which used the driving force of the Aujon, into a sawmill, using a rather impressive steam engine as the source of energy on the site itself. Dating from 1896, this engine was used to run the old sawmill: 3 storeys high, with a hearth, a 9 m3 tubular boiler, an 80 HP steam engine with a 3.5 m flywheel. It was in operation until 1963.
It should be noted that this machine, listed as a historic monument in 1977, is now one of the few examples of its type still in working order.
The guided tour of the steam engine is part of the discovery trail of the village of Arc-en-Barrois and La Glacière.
Guided tours can be booked at the 3 Forêts Tourist Office.
