The cathedral was managed by a large number of monks, the canons, who reorganised the town planning around the cathedral from the 13th century onwards. Previously living in communal buildings (dormitory, refectory, cloister, etc.), they later moved into private residences. Vast and elegant, they now form the canonical quarter and are among the finest private mansions in the city.
