The ZNIEFF of the Creux d'Aujon marsh is located in a steep, west-facing valley, where the sources of the Aujon rise. The slopes are wooded, with different types of forest present. Several private ponds occupy part of the valley, representing a rare type of alkaline pond.
For nature lovers :
Two tufa marshes typical of the Plateau de Langres are the main feature of the ZNIEFF's vegetation, with one species protected throughout France, the choin ferrugineux, and two species protected in Champagne-Ardenne, the broad-leaved cottongrass and the aconite napel. Apart from the latter, they are all on the regional red list of plants, as are five other species present on the site: marsh parnassia, smart sedge, water clover, a small fern, ophioglossa and an orchid, the incarnate orchid.
Fauna:
The entomofauna contains a remarkable wealth of species, including dragonflies such as the agrion de Mercure, which is protected both nationally and at European level (Bern Convention and Habitat Directive) and is listed in the red book of vulnerable species in France, the cordulégastre bidenté, a rare mountain species throughout France, and the cordulégastre annelé, both of which are on the red list of Odonates in Champagne-Ardenne. The spotted salamander and a bat, Daubenton's vespertilion, also frequent the area.
The area is in a good state of conservation following initial management in 1993 and additional management in 1997 (treatment of the alders). A Biotope Protection Order was issued for the communal marsh in 1992.
