The pear tree (known as the Villemervry tree) was created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone in response to a commission from the Grancey-le-Château town council. This modern sculpture was inaugurated on 13 December 2008 and is intended to preserve the memory of a tree that for many years was a signpost marking the passage between Burgundy and Champagne.
