The commune of Braux-le-Châtel is located on the very important Roman road that led from Langres to Reims (Andemantunnum-Durocortorum).

Leaning against the village washhouse are the remains of a Gallo-Roman fountain that was used to rehydrate the many travellers. It contains a vault decorated with sculptures: a conch supported by two tritons, one of which disappears into the wall (19th century), an extended naiad, a shell crown and traces of a dolphin.
The Gallo-Roman fountain, restored in 1853, is a listed historic monument.

Other traces of the Gallo-Roman era can be found in the surrounding area, including traces of a villa at Bricon and a 64m2 mosaic depicting a fight between a wild beast and a snake at Maranville.
