Called the "Elder Fountain" before the French Revolution, the fountain in the village square had a very low flow rate, which meant it could not meet the needs of the inhabitants. This shortage made it impossible to fight a fire in times of drought. In 1787, it was decided to carry out major works, including the construction of a covered washhouse, the fitting of an iron grille over the central part of the drinking trough and a new stone crown against the side gable. They were awarded to François Mathieu Andriot, a contractor in Rochetaillée, for the sum of 7,493 livres 9 sols 2 deniers. The contractor in question died before the work was completed. His widow Marie-Charlotte Baudin completed the work. As the work dragged on because of the situation, an extension of 2,324 livres was requested. This was too much to bear, especially as urgent work also had to be carried out on the church and the cemetery.
