A fine group of open-air wash-houses with stone paving. On the right, the gambrel-roofed Saint-Nicolas fountain is set against a retaining wall (a vertical wall used to contain earth). Its sandstone blocks are reminiscent of the nearby Vosges mountains. Two troughs in front of the fountain lead to a washing basin with a rinsing board. In this way, women could wash their clothes near the animals that came to drink, but for reasons of hygiene, the two functions were kept separate.
