Following a number of epidemics, Parliament passed the law of 3 February 1851, granting a special credit to communes to subsidise the construction of covered washhouses by 30%.
On 12 May 1852, the town council voted 705.40 francs to build a washhouse.
The Cour-l'Evêque washhouse is unusual in that its roof overhangs the river to protect the washerwomen from the rain. It has two washing levels, depending on how high the water rises.
