The river we are following is called the Traire. It rises at the Mediterranean-Manche watershed. It is a green valley, ideal for livestock farming. Its fish-farming qualities are much appreciated by anglers. Upstream, the people of Nogent learned to swim here, and water sports festivals were held until the first half of the 20th century.
There is also a water retention system, which fed an underground aqueduct to the cutlery factory located in the former priory. This system demonstrates the importance of hydraulic power in the industrialisation of the Nogentais basin during the 19th century. The water either powered the machines directly, thanks to a waterwheel, or was used to generate electricity, thanks to a dynamo or turbine.
